GION Festival in July

GION festival is an annual event of Yasaka-jinja shrine in the whole month of July.

It is one of the three biggest festivals of Japan along with

Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka and Kanda Matsuri in Tokyo.

One of the highlights of the festival is “Yamaboko-Junko” parade on the 17th and 24th.

UNESCO designated the “Yamaboko-Junko” on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In the 3 evenings before each parade,

many lanterns on the floats are lit up and

“Kon-Chiki-Chin” festive music known as “Gion-Bayashi” can be heard around the area.

It is very exciting to watch these “moving museums” closely

because of their elaborate decoration with tapestries, wooden and metal ornaments.

Why don’t you walk around the center of Kyoto city in a festive mood?
